Although writing an obituary can be an emotional task, it is also an opportunity to honour and remember the life of the deceased. With respect, empathy and honesty, you can create an emotional memory that will last a long time. Here are some steps on how to get started.

Write all the important information about the deceased person in short informative sentences, bullet points. To help and give you an idea, we’ve put together some clues, which you can find below.
Tips and recommendations
- First and last name: Start with the deceased’s full name.
- Date of birth and death: give the dates of birth and death of the deceased.
- Place of birth and death: describe where the deceased was born and where he/she died.
- Family: Mention surviving family members such as spouse, children, grandchildren, etc.
- Occupation and achievements: list the deceased’s professional achievements and contributions to his/her career or community.
- Hobbies and interests: describe any hobbies, activities or interests that were important to the deceased.
- Important milestones: include important events or milestones in the deceased’s life, such as marriages, births of children, achievements at work, etc.
- Legacy: Describe how the deceased influenced the lives of others and what legacy they left behind.
- Funeral details: if available, include information about the funeral or memorial event.
- Education: Please list the schools, universities or other educational institutions the deceased attended and any achievements or diplomas.
- Religious affiliation: if religion was important in the life of the deceased, you can mention religious affiliation or contributions to churches or religious communities.
- Contributions to the community: highlight how the deceased contributed to the local community or humanitarian activities.
- Special qualities or personal characteristics: Describe any special qualities that characterised the deceased, such as cordiality, curiosity, humour, etc.
- Awards and honours: if the deceased received any awards or honours for their work or activities, please include them.
- Relationship with friends and colleagues: tell about the deceased’s relationship with friends, colleagues and others who were part of his life.
- Beloved memories: share beloved memories of the deceased shared by loved ones.
- Philanthropy: If the deceased was active in charities or was a philanthropist, mention his work in this field.
- Special wishes for remembrance: if the family or the deceased has specific wishes for remembrance or a donation in his memory, please include this in the obituary.
- Social life: Describe how the deceased enjoyed socialising with friends, family time or social activities.
- Cultural contributions: if the deceased was active in art, music, literature or other cultural activities, include this in the obituary.
- Views and beliefs: if the deceased had strong views or beliefs on certain issues that were important to them, you can share them.
- Reactions and memories of others: include quotes or memories from other people who have shared their thoughts about the deceased.
- Significant journeys or travels: If the deceased was a keen traveller or had special journeys that marked his or her life, you can mention them.
- Concern for the environment or animals: if the deceased was an ardent supporter of environmental or animal rights, include this in the obituary.
- Interesting anecdotes: share interesting or funny anecdotes from the deceased’s life that he shared with his loved ones.
